A farrier uses an anvil as a heavy, solid work surface to shape, alter, and level horseshoes so they match the exact size and contour of a horse's hoof.The flat top surface is used for general hammering, flattening, and truing the shoe to make sure it rests completely flat against the hoof. The tapered, rounded end allows the farrier to bend metal into smooth curves, open up the radius of a shoe, or shape custom arcs. Specialized notches or protrusions on the side of a farrier's anvil help bend and turn the heels of the shoe precisely. The clip horn is used to pull, draw, or form toe clips (small upward-projecting pieces of metal on the shoe that stabilize it against the hoof wall). The pritchel hole is used to support the shoe while punching or clearing out nail holes without damaging the punch tool. The hardy hold is a square hole that accepts accessory tools like cutting chisels or bending posts.
